Somebody Gonna Get-a-Hurt Real Bad

I know Carlos Mencia is under fire for reusing other comics stuff. I just found some more of his recycling. I was watching the 2nd season of 'The Mind of Mencia' when I came across two sketches which were so similar to Russell Peters material from several years back that I had to make the comparison.

Compare the videos below:

Russell Peters

Carlos Mencia

Russell Peters entire schtick was based on the whupping routine and I remember him complain that internet downloaders (there was no youtube then) had nearly ruined his act as everyone had seen his material and he couldnt create new stuff fast enough.

I had actually watched both Carlos and Russell perform at the same venue in 2005 at the Wild 94.9 Comedy Jam. Carlos was the featured act that night but he sure took some inspiration from the lesser known comic.

Well, stealing bits is workin for Carlos. Let that be a lesson to all you sucky comedians out there; if you are unfunny, you aren't watching enough old footage of comics who are.

I don't see the resemblance. I've watched both. Beating your kids is a common joke...or depending on how hard you do it, not a joke.

If you're going to steal stuff, at least make it funny. That second video is shiiite and the only funny bits in the first aren't from carlos.

Ya cmon man; there are few to no similarities between the two, other than the topic of white ppl not beating their kids, and coloured folks doing so .... which is a topic we've been talkin 'bout since we were 6.

Same topic, different delivery, and both comedians are foreign. What you want?

I agree with Harry.

It's one thing if your joke has the same plot and same punch line...but those three videos have little in common except topic.

I've seen some stuff that Carlos has copied out right, however, in this case I don't see much resemblance.

Sure, they are both speaking of spanking kids, but the content is not the same.

Beating your kids is such a generic topic Mencia isn't the only one who has used it for a skit or stand-up. I can name a BUNCH of comedians who have used it including Martin Lawrence and George Lopez. People love to point fingers at Mencia like Joe Rogan.. But Joe is just mad that he has to do Fear Factor, host UFC and do stand up to get the same amount of pay of Mencia. I don't care for Mencia but give the guy a break, everything has been said and done before. I don't know one comedian who didn't have one bit you couldn't compare to anothers!

agreed, topics are the same but no stealing here. I think people are looking to closely at Mencia, some of it deserved most not.

there is little to no similarity in any of those videos, aside from the topic which as others have stated goes back way be4 peters talked about it. although mencia has stolen in the past this is just not one of those cases

First - I'm not a fan of Mencia. I've seen a bunch of the stuff that he's ripped off. With that said, this is a bit of a stretch. The topic is pretty generic and a lot of comedians talk about it. Sinbad comes to mind. Its not like the other cases where he pretty much stole the whole routine. Sorry - think you're off base here.

looks like a ripoff to me. its the same jokes. One's a skit and one is stand up. The joke isn't beating your kids. The joke is that white people don't. To me neither Mencia or Peters are funny.

This is getting out of control. I hate Menstealia as much as the next guy, but this is not even close to theft. He's interviewing people on the streets...not doing standup.

What next, Seinfeld made a joke about Halloween and candy, so now those two topics cant be mentioned in stand up ever again?

I usually agree with post of his rip-offs, but not really this one.

I did laugh through Russel's stuff and not at all through Menstealia's. Russel has a lot of other great stuff, too.

lol that Russell Peters was funny

Anonymous said...

I don't think there was all that much resemblance.

Yeah they both talk about punishment but still it's not really copying. Russell Peters does have a much better skit than Mencia. Carlos' work always seems so forced to me.

I don't know if this is really stealing, maybe imitation, but Russell Peters is really funny, Mencia is tedious to me.

This is erroneous. Carlos Mencia is not funny. Russell Peters is. Carlos just makes a lot of noise, and plays with racial sterotypes. Peters actually has good material; It flows well, and has rythm.

Carlos has his show because once Dave Chappelle left, Comedy Central was panicking, and they just threw some money and the only other show that was similar to Dave's.

Carlos does use other people's material, and there is a pretty funny clip out there some place when Joe Rogan actually confronts him on stage and Carlos doesnt know wtf to do.

Change your page to SuperMoron. What a freaking waste of my time, I can't believe this made it to digg, com.

YAY!

"Somebody-gonna-get-a-hurt-real-bad!"

I watch this routine all the time on "Just for Laughs." I never knew that this "Carlos Mencia" guy stole it from this guy. I've never even heard of Carlos Mencia. :-o

Didn't Eddie Murphy do the same joke about cussing at you're parents after seeing a white kid do it? Does that mean Russell Peters is stealing?

Anonymous said...

Sorry dude, this isn't a steal. But the first one was so funny.

Anonymous said...

The bit about the kid cursing at his mom wheras immigrant kids won't dare to is almost literally what Eddy Murphy talks about in Delirious and I'm pretty sure he did that bit before Russel Peters.. should we yell copycat here too or shoul we just stick to artists inspriring eachother..

Anonymous said...

Similar topics but I saw no "stealing". Are you trying to say no other comedian out there has ever made fun of beating their kids??? Poor comparison.

Anonymous said...

Regardless...Carlos Mencia is a hack and he should have no creditability with anything he says.

Anonymous said...

Mencia's stolen from other comics, but the topic of how ethnic parents spank their kids and white people don't is pretty common. I've seen quite a few comics before Russell Peters do it. Besides the common topic there are no similarities between the videos.

Russel Peters stole this one from Eddie Murphy. In either Raw or Delirious he does the same routine about how white kids can swear at their parents blah blah blah. And Eddie probably stole it from Richard Pryor.

Get over it.

Open your mind. said...

All comedians steal...anyone who thinks otherwise is...dee dee dee!

i am an advid Laff Factory patron and Improv patron...Russell Peters is the most originall comedian, based on his premises and material to support to come out in a long , long time..his global success is a tribute to that. Mencia is actually known inside the industry as a joke stealer, he has done verbatum other peoples material on stage, including the likes of Dane Cook and others. ask anyone in the LA comedy scene and they will tell you how its a known fact that Mencia is good, but a fraud to to a certain level.

mancia is a hack

Notice Mencia's opening statement:
"I got my ass beat, I turned out fine."

DEE DEE DEE! Best case against spanking I've ever seen.

Anonymous said...

The difference is that Mencia doesn't know the difference between JOKING and PREACHING. I can't stand him trying to shove his opinion down my throat.

"And now, MR. KNOW-IT-ALL, Carlos Mencia!"

Russell Peters stole this from Eddie Murphy. Check this out:
